Why do we think science can´t be fun?

What would you think if I started a conversation with you and said ‘qalop’meH QaQ jajvam’? would you understand anything?

The truth is that I wouldn’t understand anything at all.

The same thing happens to me when I read scientific articles that are so technical that I need an instruction manual to decipher them.

And on this about me page I’m going to tell you about it.

For this reason, with the blog I write about data science in the health sector, my main goal is to bring science closer to all kinds of audiences to make it more accessible and fun, like the series ‘The Big Bang Theory’ does.

Fun fact: I am a huge fan of this show and I laugh my head off when I watch it. I love the combination of science, humour and that geeky side we all have, even if it’s just a little bit.

JOURNEY INTO MYSELF: DISCOVERING THE WORLD OF DATA SCIENCE

There came a time in my life when I felt that I had everything I needed to be happy: studies, a good job, a boyfriend, a nice flat to live in and good friends. However, I felt that something was missing and that I was not happy.

What was missing for me to feel fulfilled?

It was then that I decided to start a path of self-discovery.

I learned to meditate, I was changing my way of living to a positive way of living, I took courses in personal self-knowledge, I made changes in my life until I accidentally came across data science.

Thanks to my sister I discovered what data science is.

I started looking for information about it on the internet and that’s how I started to take my first steps.

Reading ‘The Art of Statistics: How to learn from data’ by author David Spiegelhalter was a good starting point. In simple and readable language he teaches you how to extract knowledge from data, focusing on statistics and including examples from the real world.

 I was fascinated

Since then, I immersed myself in an initial ‘Get started in Data Analytics’ course from Datahack.

After the course, I listen to podcasts, read blog articles and am excited about all the things I still have to study to become an expert in Data Science and Big Data.

An important lesson I have learnt is that it is never too late to start something new and keep growing.

What about you, do you dare to discover what data science can offer you?

Soy Marta Gan: from operating room to code. Repairing machines instead of people.

I want to be a surgeon! Did you know that when I was little I dreamt of being a doctor and operating?

I couldn’t explain the reason for this desire, but it was a feeling of attraction to the world of health.

Although my current profession has led me to work and repair medical diagnostic equipment in hospitals and health centres, the feeling of helping others or contributing to improving people’s health is still my main motivation.

I remember the first time I went into an operating room to repair an ultrasound machine. I learnt the protocol for entering a hospital operating room and, although I was nervous, I was also very excited; I was able to discover what a real operating room was like. I watched a patient being operated on and in those moments I felt a special connection to my childhood dream.

Being in touch with new technologies in the health sector and having the ability to repair equipment so that it can continue to be used allows me to contribute directly to improving the lives of many people.
